ChildLine is the UK's free 24-hour helpline for children in danger or distress. Children can call ChildLine about any problem. Over the last 20 years ChildLine has helped nearly two million children - saving children's lives, bringing abusers to justice, finding refuge for children in danger on the streets and giving hope to thousands of children who believed that no one else cared for them. Every day 4,500 children call ChildLine, but the enormous demand for ChildLine's service means that around 2,000 of these children cannot get through.
It costs ChildLine just £3 to answer a call from a distressed child. ChildLine's 20th Birthday Appeal aims to raise £20 million - to help another 1,000 children each day and to keep helping the 2,500 helped already.
Children call ChildLine about a wide range of problems, but the most common are abuse (both sexual and physical), bullying, serious family tensions, worries about friends' welfare and teenage pregnancy.
ChildLine's team of over 1,000 trained volunteer counsellors, supervised by a team of professional supervisors and managers, provide comfort, advice and protection to children and young people who may feel they have nowhere else to turn.
ChildLine campaigns on behalf of children by relaying what they say to policy-makers who can help to change their lives for the better.
ChildLine also provides a service to schools and youth groups through its outreach programme ChildLine in Partnerships (CHIPS).
