When children study the legend of St George at school, they will be fascinated to learn that he was a knight of the Middle East, and that he is the patron saint of many other countries, including Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece.
There are many variations to the legend: some suggest he just tamed the dragon, some say he slew it to rescue a princess. Either way, he is a romantic figure that English people are proud to call their patron saint.
